Abortion AFtercare FAQs

  • The duration of bleeding varies for every individual. Typically bleeding lasts about 1 week, more or less. Sometimes people bleed longer than a week, which we tend to see with later gestational ages. Some people may have spotting up until their next period (which can take 4-8 weeks to return). Let us know If you have heavy bleeding for more than 2 weeks. Cramping shouldn’t last more than a few days after taking misoprostol.

  • We suggest wearing pads or period underwear for the first 48 hours after taking misoprostol, and then switching to tampons, cups, or discs if desired.

  • Most people can start exercising as soon as their body feels ready. We suggest giving yourself at least 48 hours of rest. Start slow and work your way up in intensity. Keep in mind, it is normal to have increased bleeding and cramping during or after exercise.

  • Similarly to exercise, you can start having sex again when you feel ready. Generally we suggest 48 hours of rest and avoiding anything entering the vagina during that time. Keep in mind that orgasm causes the uterus to contract, so it may feel tender immediately after an abortion.

  • Most hormonal contraception like the pill, ring, patch, or implant can be started immediately after taking misoprostol, or within a few days after. An intrauterine device (IUD) can also be placed immediately when the provider can confirm that the abortion Is complete. In contrast, some providers may suggest waiting to lace an IUD for about 1 week.
